"We stayed for a few nights for a friend's wedding at the end of April. We thoroughly enjoyed being at the hotel & found it to have bags of character. Very friendly & helpful staff. Special mention must be made of the barman (name escapes sorry) & front desk lady, Abbie. Room was warm, clean & nicely decorated. Food was good & the desserts were wonderful, especially the cranachan! A well stocked bar & excellent barman. We would love to return."

“Situated on the shore of Loch Awe this is a lovely welcoming dog friendly hotel with great staff. We have just spent 4 nights in a loch side apartment with stunning views.
We were provided with a breakfast hamper on the first morning as we preferred to have breakfast in the apartment. Could not fault the generous contents. The food in the restaurant was superb especially the quality of the meat. I also felt the drinks were very reasonably priced. We had brilliant weather which is always a bonus and our dog, Lola, loved it as well. We have already recommended the hotel to friends."

"An idealic 4 night break and well looked after! As a party of 4 we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the hotel. The restaurant service and menu choice was excellent with very healthy portion size - check out the lamb curry!! It proved a perfect base for the activities we had planned in a location to die for."

“This was my sixth visit to Portsonachan and my friend's fourth. We both said it feels like coming home. The hotel is comfortable and in a beautiful setting. The restaurant staff have increased in number since our last visit and were supervised expertly by Beatrice. Her welcome when we arrived was great and genuine. Sam on front desk was very helpful as usual. A good place to stay for touring around or just to chill and relax. Have already bought a voucher fof trip number 7 in july."

"Spent two nights for the Burns Supper weekend. Nice greeting from reception and shown to our apartment which was huge and in pristine condition. The hotel itself has been tastefully refurbished with log fires and antiques and paintings. The Supper was very professionally done. Lovely meal and excellent entertainer. Look forward to going again."

“Had a fantastic time at Portsonachan for New Year. Lovely gala dinner on New Year’s Eve with music and dancing, then bagpipes and poems courtesy of John Hunt. We brought in the bells with fireworks, more bagpipes and dink of champagne/ whiskey. Wonderful service from all and nothing was any trouble, quick turnaround when we had a wee mishap with the toaster, special thanks to Daniel for bringing it over so quickly for us. We stayed in the Lochside apartments this year and they were well equipped with everything we needed and even had some lovely highland shampoos ect the the shower. The views were amazing and my dog had a brilliant time, thank you for being such a dog friendly/ loving hotel. Can’t wait to book again for next new year and will hopefully book a summer trip when it’s even more beautiful. Thanks gain the team for a fantastic stay.”

The staff are very helpful and accommodating and the food is lovely at reasonable prices. Most of the guests we've spoken to love it here and are regular visitors. We will definitely be staying here again."

"Staff very friendly and helpful, good food and super beer! Apartment was clean and had everything we needed. Extra comfy bed. Oban was pretty, and there is a train to that or Glasgow near (15 mins drive) from Dalmally. Inverary is a pleasant stop, in season the castle is well worth a visit. We have an electric car, and the hotel charger made a big difference to our stay."

“From the minute we arrived on Boxing day we were made so welcome. It was great to take our dog Maisie who everyone made a fuss of. David made me some amazing cocktails. Beatrice was so friendly nothing too much trouble. She loved Maisie and fussed her everytime she saw her. Compliments to the chef the food was so good. Definitely will return."

“I drove up with one of my best friends for a mini break away together and this place ticked all the boxes. Definitely a great place to stay, especially for these two Harry Potter fans! The hotel is a gorgeous old house, the food was lovely and they happily catered for gluten free (I’m Coeliac) and veggie. The staff were so lovely to chat to and really accommodating! There was a homely feel to the place, especially the lounge area with the fire on and a cuppa tea and book - felt like we were in the Gryffindor common room! Our room had all we needed, and the views were stunning! HIGHLY recommend, we will 100% be returning! Thank you for a great stay :)”

“Me and my wife thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and fount it to be the perfect getaway we needed. The apartment was perfect from the view to amenities and cleanliness with modern fixings etc. The main hotel was warm and welcoming with period features, log fires in the bar and lounge and presentable eating areas where we enjoyed faultless meals and breakfast. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome and also advised us on places to visit and information on the area. Overall a relaxing stay and a very pleasant break from city living. Thank you all.”

“Hotel Portsonachan was one of our top experiences during our travels! It’s just what we needed when we were ready to escape the cities and unwind with nature. The beauty is incredible there & the staff made our stay even better! We enjoyed the welcoming feeling of it being like a home away from home-especially since we were a long ways from home! Highly recommend!”

“Really enjoyed our couple of days stay at Portsonachan. Staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Our room in the coachhouse building didn’t really have a view but it didn’t in any way spoil it. Views from the hotel and patio absolutely magical. Our two Border Terriers were made very welcome which is important to us. Staff always had a greeting for them and a wee dog treat. The meals were delicious and plenty of choice. This wee hotel is indeed a little corner of tranquil heaven. Thanks to all the staff. You really make it special.”

Portsonachan's Favourite Review
“This was the perfect weekend getaway. So peaceful, so relaxing, so perfect - just what was needed. An oasis in the middle of nowhere! We like staying at independent hotels, and this was a good choice - about two and a half hours from home, making the two night stay just about right.
The hotel itself has all types of accomodation to suit all needs, and is perfectly located on the side of Loch Awe with views of Ben Cruachan. We were in the main building on the second floor, with lots of twists and nooks and crannies! The room was a good size, the bed amazingly comfy, and the bathroom was bright and clean, with loads of hot water. Like most of the houses along this side of the Loch, the hotel has its own water supply - which is incredibly peaty! So, it comes out brown, and is fine for washing in, but not drinking. Bottled water for the kettle and cleaning your teeth is supplied. Not a problem in the slightest!
The décor is typically Scottish hotel, but you're not really there for that. You're there to watch the world go by, and look at the water! There are plenty of places to do just that...
The bar has a good selection of gin (even for a fussy git like me!), and the husband was very happy with the whisky selection. The wine selection was much better than we were expecting, and I did partake of the bubbles! All very reasonably priced.
The food was very good - some nice starters (prawn cocktail was lush, as were the creamy garlic mushrooms), and the meat was lovely (steak one night, lamb rump the next - yum!). Breakfast was good - the Continental is included, but there is a small cost for cooked food. The scrambled egg with smoked salmon was lovely. So, all in all, traditional fare, but very nicely done, and massive portions!
And the staff were lovely! So friendly, professional, and can't recommend them highly enough.
We have already decided that we will be back. A perfect place to recharge the batteries.”
